5 Do’s & Don’ts to Avoid a ‘Meh Day’

 
 

 

بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
 

Ok, so lately I’ve been suffering from those days which are best described in today’s slang as ‘meh’ ( to give it a proper word would probably do it too much justice) yanno those days where you just feel a little lost, unproductive, lethargic, down, unfocused, uninspired, apathetic, uninterested etc  and what makes it all worse is that there is no actual real major reason/problem for you to feel so negative. Yep so those days have been occurring more often than I would like, to the point where I’ve just sat myself down and give myself a good ol’ one to one, the ‘sort yourself out woman’ pep talk and since then I’ve been overcoming those days alhamdulillah. 

I assume that since you are here you read the title and thought a) what on earth is a ‘Meh day’ or b) yes ‘Meh days’ so annoying, how do I fix it. well here are my 5 do’s and do not’s that have been very effective for me. 




5 Things to Do

 

Dhikr/Worship

 

 

 

And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). (Muhsin Khan)

 

Since it is the whole purpose of our existence we should priorities the worship of Allah before anything else. Start your day with your fajr prayer and morning dhikr and  end it with your evening dhikr and pray your salah on time, we can not expect our day to get any better if we do not fulfill that which Allah has created us for.

 


Be Productive 

 

This is everything. Just busy yourself in goodness whether it’s your direct worship to Allah or your work or even hobbies just do it. Don’t sit there thinking about it and feeling down about not doing it because that doesn’t make sense.Get your checklist ready and start ticking them boxes and remember to do it all for the sake of Allah for the Jannah points.
 
Gather With Good Companions 

This can really turn my day around. Invite good friends around, friends that will remind you of Allah and your purpose of life, good companionship is everything to set your affairs and raise your Eman bithinillah and also a great way to help get inspired too. A beautiful hadeeth of the prophet Mohammed (sal allahu alayhi wasalam) that explains the importance of good companionship is:

“The example of the good and evil companions is like a bearer of musk and a person blowing a pair of bellows. As for the musk bearer, he either gives you some, or you buy from him or at least you get a pleasant smell from him. As for the bellows blower he either gets your clothes burnt or you get an unpleasant smell from him.” (Al–Bukharee and Muslim)

Eat Healthy

 

Eating well makes you feel good and more energetic thus more productive. Start your day with a healthy breakfast set those taste buds straight for the rest of the day and maintain healthy meals and snacks throughout the day. Here is a previous post on the importance of healthy eating in Islam.

Look Good to Feel Good.


If you are experiencing a ‘Meh day’ you’re more than likely sitting there in your sweats or PJs looking pretty rough a bit like your mood, well you’ll be surprised what a fresh face and a pretty outfit would do to that mood. 5 Things to Don’t Do

Being Lazy

Seriously there is nothing worse to add to your feeling of crappiness than sitting down and doing nothing about it. it is so easy to cave in to moping around and listen to shaitan’s whispers that justify you doing nothing, but we all know that shaitan is never there to make us feel better or put us in a better state so get up, brush the devil away and start reaching those goals.
 
Eating Junk Food 
Such a weakness for many of us, a moment of pure comfort followed by a one big massive ‘ugggh why did  I eat that and why soo much of it?’! Like I said food will contribute to your energy levels so watch what you eat and also it never feels good when you know what you’ve just eaten has nearly no nutrients and benefits to your body.
 
Excessive Scrolling

our phones are the biggest means to time wasting we can just literally be checking for something and oh crap 1 hour of scrolling just flew right by and although life is made difficult to part away from our mobile phones there is no excuse for how much time we actually waste on them surely we can use our time to benefit us more.
 
Neglecting Dhikr and Worship 

do not be negligent in this affair for the reasons stated above, I’m adding this in the don’t to add emphasis on the importance of dhikr and worship, not just in the obligatory but forgetting to do things for the sake of Allah in our day to day activities.
 
Complaining

It’s so easy to feel sorry for ourselves and start complaining about how “hard” things are and how crap you feel but trust me complaining does nothing but make you feel even worse than you already are. This is something that I always fall short on and I never feel good after it, why? Because it is not the way of our beloved prophet Mohammed SAWS nor the Salaf, when I read about their patience and how they withheld from complaining except when they complained to Allah, I feel like an idiot for complaining to those who have not the power or the mercy of Allah. Here are some narrations of the Salaf that Al-Dhahabi brings from his book Al-siyar.

 

Shaqiq al-Balkhee said, “Whoever complained of a calamity to other than Allaah, he will not find the sweetness of obedience” (9/315). 

Hamdoon al-Qassaar said, “No one despairs from a calamity except one who suspects His Lord” (13/51). 

Mugheerah said, “The eye of al-Ahnaf was lost, and al-Ahnaf said, ‘I lost it forty years ago and I have not complained to a single person’.” (4/92). 

Al-Asma’ee said, “al-Fudayl saw a man complaining to another so he said, ‘O So and so! Are you complaining about the one who shows you mercy (Allaah) to one who does not show you mercy (man)’.” (8/439)

The fact of the matter is ‘meh days’ are ‘meh days’ because there is no real good reason for you to feel in such a negative way. So always remind yourself of the blessings bestowed upon you, keep your mind busy and inspired, eat good, feel good and it should immediately fix your priorities by the will of Allah. You won’t half feel stupid for the mood that you were in and evermore grateful that you were able to live productively for the day.

  1. As a new mother, 'meh' days are quite common for me. What you said abt looking good to feel good is pretty true! Totally experienced that ….feeling of blah while I am in a vomit filled pjs versus feeling fresh after a bath and a good dress.

  2. I've been having so much meh days this past month it's incredible. I agree with being productive it really makes your day wroth it. I would also add exercise in the morning if you can it'll help you eat healthy later on as well

  3. Great post! I find if I'm feeling a bit 'meh!, I just need to get moving. Get in the shower, clean something, get out the house….anything! Just doing something helps me to feel more energised 🙂

    I can relate to most of these, just by looking eye to eye in the mirror and reminding yourself of your goals can also blow away the negativity
